We have a dining table made of wood, from our cats, before he struck. We had repaired recently and left town for the holidays, so we have a quick fix, need something to cover the table and to protect against scratches. Get a regular plastic feel tablecloth. Maybe even two of them to offer additional protection.
Be sure to keep the corners either with tweezers or adhesive tape.
At the top of the table, randomly laid out several pieces of double-sided tape.

It is a work for my cat, you can see if it works for you. Try cutting a small wood fire and some of his liquid cat toys (sprayed on to play in the vicinity of the meeting in order to become familiar with the region).
